Conoscenze

Knowledge

Acquisition of basic knowledge on the following topics: 1) origin, evolutionary history, and systematics of the main clades of vertebrates, with special attention to selected groups of marine vertebrates (marine mammals: Cetacea, Sirenia, Pinnipedia e Desmostylia); 2) palaeoecology and taphonomy of vertebrates in terrestrial and marine environments; 3) evolutionary patterns and extinction mechanisms in terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

During the lessons it will be possible to evaluate the stundents' degree of learning and knowledge maturation.

Skills

The student will be able to describe and recognize the fossils belonging to the main groups of vertebrate organisms approached during the lessons. She/he will also be able to understand their value from the palaeoecological, palaeobiogeographical and evolutionary viewpoints.

Assessment criteria of skills

During the lessons it will be possible to evaluate the students' degree of acquisition ot the skills.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

The lessons will provide the student with a basic experience in paleontological methods, with particular reference to those most commonly used in vertebrate paleontology.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

During the lessons it will be possible to evaluate the students' degree of acquisition ot the most common methods of vertebrate paleontology.

Non-attending students info

Non-attending students are invited to contact the teacher by e-mail to obtain the teaching material useful for the preparation of the final examination. That said, attendance is highly recommended!

Assessment methods

Oral examination. The examination should start with a brief presentation (about 10 minutes long) based on a scientific article and aimed at expanding on one aspect of vertebrate palaeontology (to be previously agreed with the teacher). The student should also be able to recognize the fossils that may be shown to him during the examination.
