Il seminario intende affrontare l'esame del volume di I. Lakatos, Proofs and Refutations, pubblicato nel 1963 sul British Journal for the Philosophy of Science e poi pubblicato in volume nel 1976. Il testo presenta una straordinaria analisi del procedere della matematica informale, o preformale, che è rimasta insuperata. Lakatos procede dal lavoro di Popper sul "falsificazionismo" e di Polya sull'"euristica matematica" per delineare una originale e interessantissima caratterizzazione congetturale e fallibilista della matematica.
Lo studente dovrà apprendere come nel quadro concettuale di Lakatos si intreccino le procedure definizionale e quelle dimostrative; nel senso che cercare di dimostrare un certo risultato riguardo a determinate entità matematiche porti a conoscerle meglio e a ottenerne una più appropriata definizione.
The seminar intends deal with the volume "Proofs and Refutations" by Imre Lakatos, published in 1963 sul British Journal for the Philosophy of Science and succesively published as a volume in 1976. The text provides a wonderful exploration of how mathematics evolves. This gives some real sense of how regimenting proofs in order to clarify their assumptions –the process which formalization idealizes– is just one phase in the complex process that leads to the growth of mathematical knowledge. Connections with K. Popper's "falsificationistic" perspective and with "mathematical heuristics" of G. polya.
Students will be expected to get acquainted with the way in which within the Lakatos's framework definitional and deductive procedure are strictly entangled.

Acquired knowledge will be tested through a verbal examination and the presentation of a written text on a topic proposed by the teacher.
Lo studente dovrà saper collocare l'opera di Lakatos nel contesto della reazione antipositivista originatasi con l'opera di Popper e con la successiva critica dello stesso Popper da parte di epistemologi come Kuhn, Feyerabend, e altri.
The students will have to be able to collocate Lakatos's work in the context of the antipositivistic movement started by Popper and with the successive criticism of Popper by epistemologists as Kuhn, Feyerabend and others.

Il prerequisito fondamentale è una certa conoscenza dei temi classici dell'epistemologia novecentesca: i criteri di demarcazione, i temi neopositivisti e la relativa critica, il falsificazionismo di Karl R. Popper.
A general knowledge of the themes of the Philosophy of Science of the first half of the XIX century will be very useful to appreciate the contents of Lakatos's work.
Lo studente dovrebbe cercare di riuscire a seguire i temi del volume di Lakatos cercando di cogliere nel dialogo di cui si compone le varie posizioni teoriche, i loro scontri e il loro superamento.
