Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to molecular phylogenesis and systematic, with particular attention to laboratory methods and software programs used in the field. He or she will acquire a critical knowledge of molecular markers used to asses phylogenetic and systematic problems in the different group of organisms. During the practical, students will gain familiarity with molecular biology techniques, electron microscopy and with software for molecular phylogeny.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.
- In the written exam (2 hours, multi-choice and open questions), the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organise an effective and correctly written reply.
- With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results.
- During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate: 1) his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression; 2) to be able to set up experiments in the field and critically discuss/interpret them; 3) the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the practical
Methods:
- Final oral exam
- Final written exam
- Final essay
Further information:
Examination can be performed in two different way:
1) written examination 50% + oral examination 50%
or
2)seminar presentation and critical discussion 50% - oral examination 50%

Syllabus
The course provides notions on molecular markers used in phylogenesis and systematic in the different group of living organisms, on their relative evolutionary rate and on their evolutionary dynamics. The course also provide notion on the technical methods used to characterize molecular markers such as primer design strategies, probe design strategies, PCR strategies, ect. The course include laboratory practical in which students will learn: 1) some basic approaches to characterize molecular markers such as 16S rRNA genes; 2) basic notion in electron microscopy techniques; 3) how to use software for sequence analysis and tree construction, students will use the sequences produced during the first part of practical for an own phylogenetic analysis.
