Knowledge
The student who succesfully completes the course will have a solid background for designing and analyzing the most important machines elements, such as rotanting shafts, gears, brakes and the likes. In this framework he/she will be able to solve structural problems by using both standard techniques and finite element method as weel. He/She will also have a solid knowledge in the mechanichs of materials (constitutive properties, fatigue, fracture mechanics, and creep).
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. Methods:

Syllabus
The course is organized into three main parts. Mechanics of materials and constitutive materials properties, fatigue and creep of metals, and fracture mechanics are focused in the first part of the course. The second part is devoted to the analysis and to the design of the main machines elements, such as rotating shafts, brakes, gears and the likes, whereas the third part is dedicated to the introduction of the Finite Element Method for studying and solving linear structural problems.
