Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main processes and events in European and world history from 1848 to the present, and their relationship to today’s world. He or she will be able to connect different phases and crucial moments of Contemporary History, especially Contemporary European History, and to identify prominent ideologies of XIX and XX centuries (Liberalism, Fascism, Marxism).
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Syllabus
The course will focus on social and political transformation in Europe during the XIX and XX centuries, giving particular attention to the history of united Italy in the context of the history of Western Europe. The survey of European history since 1848 will include: Italian unification and German unification, the First World War, the Russian Revolution, the first post-war period, the crisis between the two world wars, authoritarian and totalitarian regimes, the Second World War, the Cold War and the division of Europe, the decolonization, the republican Italy, the origins of European integration, the end of the Cold War and the subsequent reunification of Europe, the world after the end of the Cold War. The last part of the course will concentrate on the period between the two world wars, with particular attention on the crisis of liberal Italy, the rise of Fascism and the Fascist regime.
