Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes this course will be able to demonstrate an intermediate knowledge of the mechanics of elastic solids (axisymmetric components) and of the mechanics of materials (fatigue, fracture, and creep failure phenomena). The student will be able to verify the mechanical resistance and durability of the main structural parts of a machine and pressure vessels, joints and components, using simple analytical tools as well as more complex finite element numerical software (basic level) and apply correctly the main technical standards.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student must demonstrate, in the written and oral exam, the ability to approach a problem of strength and durability assessment of machine components, organise an effective solution strategy, putting into practice, with critical awareness, the analytical procedures illustrated by the teacher and applied during the course. He must also demonstrate the ability to apply, again with critical awareness, a finite element software for the structural analysis of an assigned component, with a written report.

Syllabus
Stresses and strains in thick-walled cylinders and discs. Material behavior and failure: cyclic loading and fatigue, linear elastic fracture mechanics, creep, surface damage, phenomena and analytical methods for life prediction. The finite element method applied to two and three dimensional problems of static structural and thermal analysis. Mechanical resistance and durability verification of principal machine components: bolted and welded joints, shafts, bearings. Fundamentals of rotor dynamics.
