Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will have a solid knowledge of medical terminology in various areas of specialization. He or she will be able to read and understand different types of specialized texts, e.g. discharge instructions, research papers etc. in addition to oral messages (conference presentations). Finally, he or she will demonstrate the ability to conduct a conversation with a patient concerning symptoms and possible treatments.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her ability to use correct grammar structures and appropriate terminology in the medical field. He/she will be required to understand written texts and be able to answer multiple choice or yes/no questions.

Syllabus
Students will first revise and extend the grammar acquired at school and will then focus on the recurrent syntactic features of medical discourse. Basic and more advanced vocabulary used in the medical field will be presented and practiced through class exercises. Students will also develop practical language skills in reading comprehension. A part of the course will be dedicated to scientific/academic writing (preparation of an abstract) and to develop conference presentation skills.

Materials will be provided at the beginning of the course. Students will be able to download materials via Moodle (http://moodle.humnet.unipi.it).
