Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of mass and energy conservation equations applied to the environment and of the constitutive equations which describe the molecular or eddy diffusivity of a component in a mixture. He or she will be able to solve simple problem related to gas dispersion from a stack and to transport of polluttants in a river in presence of a chemical reaction.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
-- In the written exam the student must demonstrate his/her capacity to set up and solve simple problems related to polluttant transport and/or reaction in the environment. Methods:

Syllabus
The course presents simple mass conservation equations under steady or transient conditions relative to cases of environmental interest. These equations are extended to simple cases of heat transport. The general mass conservation equation for a 3-D system are then presented along with the Fick equation. As aan application of the above equation, the case of gas dispersion from a stack is presented along with the method of solution of simple problems. The last part of the course deals with the transport and chemical reaction of polluted water in rivers or lakes.
