Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will be able: - to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the elements of Economics and Management of Healthcare; - to demonstrate solid knowledge of the basic principles of Health Technology Assessment (HTA), with particular reference to technological and economical issues; - to demonstrate good knowledge of economic evaluation in Healthcare, in particular the main techniques of partial and full assessment. - Moreover, at the end of the course the student will be aware of the multidisciplinary approach of HTA and of its contribution in the definition and design of an economic evaluation study.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to present and discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - In the written exam, the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organize an effective and correct written reply. - The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

 In case of unavailability of the rooms due to the pandemic, the exam will be oral online.

The final evaluation will take into account the score obtained in the written exam/final essay. The attendance to lessons/tutorials/workshops is advised.

Students will be able to understand the economic and organisational logics that characterise the healthcare services.

The debate on the main topics of the course will allow the assessment of the required skills.

Behaviors

Students, listening and debating, will acquire and/or develop sensitivity towards the economic and organizational dimensions in health care and will also be able to read health policies introduced at regional and national level from these perspectives.

Active participation in the debate will allow the expected behaviour to be assessed.

Teaching methods

The course will be held remotely on the platform MSTeams. The lessons will be structured in such a way as to allow the active participation of students. In addition to lectures, therefore, case studies and discussion topics will be proposed in line with the objectives of the course.

Syllabus

The course presents the logics, the policies and the tools of the economics and management of healthcare and analyzes - also in an international perspective - the relationship between innovation (medical and technological) and economic dimension (sustainability). Among the topics covered in the course: main characteristics of the Italian Healthcare System, stakeholders in the healthcare market, demand and supply in the healthcare sector; public and private insurance mechanisms; pharmacoeconomics and Health Technology Assessment (HTA); economic evaluation techniques: cost of illness analysis, cost minimization analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-benefit analysis, cost-utility analysis; QALY and quality of life assessment; design and management of clinical-economical studies of drugs, medical devices, robotic technologies; applications of Information and Communication Technologies in the healthcare sector (telemedicine, teleconsult, teleriabilitation, imaging, e-health).
