Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to detect, describe, analyze or catalogue any European Mediaeval Art architectural monument and sculpted or painted art work, and will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of the historical development of Architecture and Visual Arts in Italy and in the rest of Europe from 4th to 15th centuries A.D. He will also be able to lead group visits and to write short texts about main European Mediaeval monuments and art masterchiefs.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression, in Italian.

Oral exam consists of 5 questions, each about a single test or group of homogeneous tests listed in the mandatory exam bibliography published on: http://omero.humnet.unipi.it/p_vediCorso.asp?idCorso=6814 (just the first part / primo modulo) One more question will be about monuments discussed during lessons. Their pictures are included in a disc available at the Biblioteca di Storia delle Arti of the Università di Pisa.

Syllabus
The course corresponds to the first part of the course of Mediaeval Art History in Italy and in Europa. It will give a general view of Art production in Mediaeval Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire to the spread of the Renaissance, exploring all typologies of architectural and artistic work, and focusing on their purpose, function, form, technique, iconography and style, also to detect role and tasks of patrons, artists and public.
