Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course aims to provide knowledge about the tools and methodologies of classical philology, so that the student can become familiar with the discussion of practical critical and textual problems and deepen the philological norms learned during the degree courses, with special reference to the conjectural critique and the editorial presentation of the data.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

At the end of a series of lectures, learning assessment will be based on the seminars assigned individually to each student. In the seminars, individual students will engage in in-depth analyses of specific topics or will comment parts of the text only briefly dealt with in classes. The evaluation of the seminars will be integrated by a final oral exam.

Skills

The student will be able to interpret the critical apparatus of scholarly editions of classical texts; s/he will also acquire confidence with the most commonly used critical conventions and will be able to assess the reliability of the various approaches to editing texts in relation to the nature and modalities of text transmission.

Assessment criteria of skills

In addition to the final exam, the assessment of skills will be possible on the basis of the questions and requests of the class, who will provide opportunity for discussion at the end of each lesson. The final evaluation will take into account the degree of student participation, in addition to the engagement in a seminar discussion.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Sensitivity to the more constructive aspects of philological practice. Awareness of the limits of a text reconstruction that does not take into account the major philological standards or make arbitrary use of them.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Discussion at the end of the frontal lessons. The ability to comprehend the questions and issues of textual criticism will be assessed during the conclusive oral examination and in the exposition of the seminar presentation.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

To attend the course in a profitable way the student will have to know the basic notions of philology provided by the degree courses. A solid knowledge of Greek and Latin is required.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The lessons will be both conventional and seminar and most of the texts will be made available through the e-learning platform of the course, which must also be consulted for the teacher's communications. Interaction with students can also take place via meetings and mail exchanges. Attendance is highly recommended. The course is taught in Italian.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Euripides's Phaethon. Reconstruction of a fragmentary tragedy.

The course proposes an analysis of the philological acquisitions that have made it possible to reconstruct the features of the story of Phaethon (a youthful son of Helios by the Oceanid Clymene, the wife of Merops) who begged his father let him drive the chariot of the sun. Perhaps one of the most mysterious and fascinating Euripidean tragedies, Phaethon allows us to outline the relationship between the human and divine spheres. Bold even in style, in antiquity as well this tragedy impressed the author of the treatise “On the sublime”.

Non-attending students info

Students who cannot attend and therefore carry out seminars will have to study the entire tragedy and be able to translate the fragments and interpret its philological problems based on the edition of J. Diggle (1970). The exam will also focus on the knowledge of reconstruction problems in the hypotheses proposed by the edition of Van Looy (Paris 2002) and Collard-Cropp-Lee (Oxford 1995).

Assessment methods

The final oral exam, an exam on the topics covered in the course and in the individual seminars, will weigh no less than 20% on the final evaluation. The participation in the debate, at the end of the lectures or seminars, will weigh 10%; otherwise the assessment will be based on the report every single student's seminar (70%), and will depend on his/her ability to adequately develop his/her research on the topic agreed upon with the teacher, to present the results by using appropriate technical terminology, and to show competence in the use of research tools and in the methodology adopted.

The minimum requirement to pass the exam (18-23/30) is for the student to be able to understand at a basic level the texts proposed by the teacher during the exam, to demonstrate a sufficient mastery of the topics dealt with in the frontal lessons, to express him/herself with a minimum of correctness, to develop at a sufficient level his/her own research on the topic agreed upon with the teacher. Middle-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to the students who produce evidence of a more than sufficient or good level in the evaluation indicators listed above. Higher scores (28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are awarded to the students who demonstrate a full mastery of the content of the course, a thorough competence in dealing with research tools and methodology, the ability to solve problems related to information retrieval and the decoding of complex texts and to use the adequate specialized vocabulary, the capacity of making autonomous judgments. A fail is determined by the lack of an understanding of the minimum content of the course or of the texts proposed at the exam, the inability to express oneself adequately and to produce an autonomous reflection on the topic agreed upon with the teacher.
