Knowledge

Students are expected to acquire some awareness of the basic concepts and methods in numerical analysis applied to solve elementary problems in mathematical analysis and linear algebra.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student must demonstrate the ability to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Laboratory report

Skills

At the end of the course students will have capability of analyzing numerical problems from the computational point of view and to provide Matlab implementation of numerical algorithms.

Assessment criteria of skills

The assessment criteria of skills rely on the discuss of the course contents and on the discuss of the laboratory report on the implementation of Matlab functions concerning the activities carried out in laboratory during the course.

Behaviors

The students will reach a numerical thought where the concepts of numerical stability and conditioning play a fundamental role, and where minimizing the computational complexity  is a continuous demand in the design and analysis of numerical algorithms.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

The discuss of the course contents and the discuss of the laboratory report on the implementation of Matlab functions concerning the activities carried out in laboratory during the course are once again the main criteria for the assessment of behaviors.

Prerequisites

Basic notions of Linear Algebra and of Calculus.

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • Laboratory work

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • Laboratory

Syllabus

The course provides notions on error analysis, finite precision number system and arithmetic, numerical approximation of the solution of nonlinear equations, efficient methods for the solution of systems of linear equation. The course also approaches the main issues related to function approximation, numerical integration and numerical solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations.
