Learning outcomes
Knowledge

This course provides the knowledge of principles, standards and techniques of auditing and management control. In the first part of the course the emphasis is on conceptual, theoretical and practical aspects of auditing financial statements. The second part develops the conceptual and practical aspects of organizations' management control systems.

Written preselected test (using the website test.ec.unipi.it) and oral exam. Students' group assessment (voluntary).

Skills

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply professional auditing standards and appropriate audit and other procedures to financial statement auditing and to analyze and develop organization's management control system.

Behaviors

Those students desiring a career in assurance services will have the essential background to conduct financial statement auditing. In addition, those students desiring a career in management control systems will have the essential background to analyze and design the budgeting system and the reporting processes.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamental of financial accounting.

Syllabus

The course is divided in two parts. The first regards the analysis of the financial statement auditing activities and of the main components of internal control and risk management systems. The second concerns the analysis of management control systems and of its main tools and processes.

 In the auditing part, the topics analyzed are:

  • Auditing and assurance services
  • Professional standards
  • Engagement planning
  • The audit risk model and the inherent risk assessment
  • Risk assessment: internal control evaluation
  • Employee fraud and the audit of cash
  • Revenue and collection cycle
  • Acquisition and expenditure cycle
  • Production cycle and the audit of inventory
  • Finance and investment cycle
  • Completing the audit
  • Reports on audit financial statement
  • Internal auditing

 In the management control part, the topics analyzed are:

  • Introduction to management control systems
  • Responsibility centres
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Financial and non-financial performance measurement systems
  • Risk management systems
