Knowledge

During this course students will have a deeper cognition on the metabolic pathways, on metabolic integration and on the specific biochemical aspects of the function of different organs. This will lead to a better comprehension of the molecular bases of  diseases  linked to an alteration of  cellular metabolic pathways and proteins function.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression

Skills

The student will be able to describe certain metabolic arrangements in cells and tissues, in different physiological and pathological conditions.

Assessment criteria of skills

During the exam, students must be albe to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and basic discipline (biochemistry and general physiology)

Behaviors

The student will be able to understand the effectiveness of the cell metabolism and the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis

Assessment criteria of behaviors

The student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression

Prerequisites

The essential knowledge is general biochemistry and physiology, other useful knowledge are about organic chemistry and molecular biology.

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • participation in discussions
  • individual study

Teaching methods:

  • power point presentations
  • question to students
  • discussion with students
Syllabus

Oxidative stress and cell systems involved in the defence from oxidative stress. Alterations of  metabolic pathways in cancer. Metabolic pathways implicated in resistance to chemotherapy. Cellular mechanisms controlling protein folding. Protein misfolding and diseases. Lipid metabolism disorders. Purines and pyrimidines functions and metabolism. Disorders linked to alteration of purines and pyrimidines metabolism. Proteolytic mechanisms in cells. Proteolytic signaling in diseases. Covalent modification of proteins in the modulation of metabolic pathways.

Bibliography

Any good and recent test of biochemistry, presentations and scientific articles are available on the Moodle platform .

Assessment methods

The exam is oral, the student will be asked to answer to 2-3 questions, in order to ascertain the knowledge of the items of the course.
