Cos’è intrinsecamente americano nell’arte americana?
What is intrinsically American in American art? The course explores some knots of this dilemma, along the chronological span between the end of the Civil War (1865) and the end of the Second World War (1945). We shall analyze the progressive articulation of the concept of American identity with respect to the Old Continent and its canonical models: modern French art and the Italian Renaissance. This happened first through the emulation of French masters (dozens of American artists expatriated to study and seek legitimation in Paris from the second half of the 19th century), and later through the acknowledgment of the specific beauty and dignity of the regional landscape and native culture of the United States, especially after the First World War. At the same time, the myths of the Italian Renaissance, republicanism, and Empire continued to mobilize the discursive rhetoric of the American nation as heir to Western civilization, up to the New Deal.
Some concepts have animated generations of artists, art critics and cultural critics, becoming topoi. These are the Puritan skepticism for artistic creation; the difficult balance between the sense of beauty and the vulgarity of goods; between artistic inspiration and engineering efficiency; between humanism and reification induced by capitalist industrial production; between nationalist chauvinism and an inferiority complex towards Europe. The course aims to highlight the recurrent articulation of these themes through the social and cultural history and the expressive style of major American artists.
