Lo studente acquisirà conoscenze storiche e metodologiche sulle grandi residenze di campagna in Inghilterra fra Sei e Settecento, analizzando il fenomeno in rapporto con le tendenze che si affermavano contemporaneamente in Francia e Olanda, paesi con cui l'Inghilterra aveva stretti rapporti.
The student will learn about historical and methodological issues concerning the growth of country houses in Britain between the Seventeenth and Eighteenth century. The course will also address some of these same issues with respect to French and Dutch country houses which provided examples for British architects and patrons.
La verifica delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso due elaborati scritti e nel corso di seminari.
The course will be assessed in the course of seminars and through two long essays which the students will have to submit.
Alla fine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di svolgere
1. una ricerca attraverso l'analisi di fonti primarie e secondarie prevalentemente in lingua inglese;
2. presentare sotto forma di seminario gli argomenti oggetto della propria ricerca;
3. scrivere un saggio logicamente strutturato e puntualmente argomentato
By the end of the course the student will be capable of:
1. undertaking research on primary and secondary sources in English;
2. presenting the results of her/ his research in seminar form supported by a power point;
3. writing a properly argued and logically structured essay.
Lo studente dovrà preparare un seminario e due relazioni scritte, di cui una sarà una versione estesa del seminario al fine di capire la differenza tra un testo da usare come traccia in una presentazione orale e una relazione propriamente strutturata ed annotata.
The student will produce a seminar and two written essays one of which will be an expanded version of the seminar itself, so as to grasp the difference between a text to be used in an oral presentation and a properly argued and written out essay.
Lo studente imparerà a lavorare in gruppo con altri studenti, a suddividere compiti e a compiere ricerca su diverse tipologie di fonti.
The student will learn to interact with his fellow students, to organize the group's work, as well as to use and study a variety of different types of sources.
Durante il lavoro di gruppo sono verificate le modalità di definizione delle responsabilità, di gestione e organizzazione delle fasi progettuali.
In seguito alle attività seminariali saranno richieste agli studenti due relazioni concernenti gli argomenti trattati.
The way in which teams of students will assign tasks and responsibilities, and structure each phase of their work will be carefully monitored and assessed. Seminars will be followed up by two essays on the topics presented in oral form.

The student should be able to read and understand academic publications in English.
Il corso è costituito da una prima parte di lezioni frontali e da una seconda parte a base seminariale in cui gruppi di studenti sono chiamati ad approfondire specifici aspetti del programma. I seminari sono preceduti da un lavoro di pianificazione congiunto tra docente e studenti, e da verifiche in corso d'opera, prima della presentazione formale.
The course will consist of a first group of frontal lectures followed by a second part in which the students will be directly engaged in seminars which will focus on specific aspects of the course syllabus. Seminars will be preceeded by planning sessions jointly held with the tutor and aimed at identifying the core issues, allotting reading and research, as well as by sessions before the formal presentations in the course of which the tutor will verify the work progress and its coherence with the targets set.

A quarant'anni di distanza dalla cruciale mostra The Destruction of the Country House, organizzata al Victoria & Albert Museum da Marcus Binney e John Harris, e a ventotto dalla grande mostra di Washington The Treasure Houses of Britain: Five Hundred Years of Private Patronage and Art Collecting a cura di Gervase Jackson-Stops, questo corso intende studiare la grande fioritura di ville e country houses nelle Isole Britanniche tra Sei e Settecento. Prodotti di forti mutamenti economici e sociali, questi edifici riflettono anche una cultura del collezionismo strettamente connessa ai rapporti con il continente europeo. Il corso intende anche stimolare una riflessione sulla conservazione e sulla fruizione di questi beni confrontandola con la situazione italiana.
Villas and country houses in Britain between the seventeenth and eighteenth century
Fourty years after the seminal exhibition The Destruction of the Country House, organized by Marcus Binney and John Harris at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and thirty years after the great Washington exhibition The Treasure Houses of Britain: Five hundred years of private patronage and art collecting curated by Gervase Jackson-Stops, this course intends to examine the growth and flourish of villas and country houses in Britain between the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The products of social and economic changes, these buildings are a testimony of a culture of display and collecting intimately linked to examples on the European continent. The course aims to stimulate a reflection on the conservation and fruition of this cultural heritage and a comparison with what is done in Italy as well.

All the teaching materials used in frontal lectures (i.e. power-points) and detailed reading lists will be uploaded on the university e-learning platform Moodle, which will also eventually contain the work produced for the students' seminars (power-points, reading materials, final essays).
L'esame è sostituito dalle prove seminariali e relativi scritti che verranno valutati in trentesimi. E' pertanto obbligatoria la frequenza.
There will be no final exam; seminars and written work will be assessed and graded according to the standard grading system (30/30). Attendancy is therefore obligatory.
