L’obiettivo del corso è di tracciare gli sviluppi fondamentali delle culture attestate nell’Egeo nel corso dell’Età del Bronzo (III e II millennio a.C.). In particolare, le lezioni sono dedicate all’analisi della civiltà minoica, delle civiltà delle isole Cicladi e della civiltà micenea.
The aim of this class is to examine the main developments of the cultures attested in the Aegean area during the Bronze Age (3rd and 2nd millennia B.C.). Specifically, the lectures are focused on the analysis of Minoan, Cycladic, and Mycenaean civilizations.
Le conoscenze acquisite durante il corso saranno verificate attraverso un esame orale.
Competency in the subject matter addressed in the class is verified through an oral exam.
Alla fine del corso, gli studenti avranno acquisito dimestichezza con le traiettorie storiche e socio-politiche che caratterizzano le civiltà dell’Egeo nel corso dell’Età del Bronzo. Essi saranno, inoltre, in grado di comprendere e contestualizzare tali traiettorie nell’ambito delle complesse dinamiche di interazione culturale sviluppatesi nel Mediterraneo Orientale nel corso del III e del II millennio a.C.
By the end of this class, students will have gained familiarity with the main historical and socio-political trajectories characterizing Aegean Bronze Age civilizations. They will also be able to frame these trajectories in the context of the complex dynamics of cultural interactions that typify the Eastern Mediterranean during the 3rd and the 2nd millennia B.C.

The skills gained during this class are tested through specific questions during the oral exam.
Gli studenti potranno acquisire la capacità di effettuare autonomamente approfondimenti culturali nel campo delle civiltà dell’Egeo e dei loro rapporti culturali con il Mediterraneo Orientale durante l’Età del Bronzo.
During this class students will develop the ability to perform relevant research queries concerning Aegean civilizations and their complex cultural relationships within the broader Eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age.
La verifica avverrà attraverso i seguenti criteri: partecipazione attiva alle lezioni; interazioni con il docente ed il resto della classe; e/o la curiosità intellettuale mostrata durante d’esame. Il pensiero critico e l’elaborazione personale dei temi affrontati durante il corso sono particolarmente apprezzati e costituiscono importanti titoli di merito.
Students’ abilities will be assessed based on the following criteria: active engagement during classes; interaction with the instructor and the rest of the class; and/or intellectual investment demonstrated during the oral exam. Critical thinking and elaboration of the subjects discussed in the class are highly encouraged and promoted.
Nessun prerequisito specifico è richiesto. Il corso ha carattere istituzionale. Gli argomenti sono trattati nella loro sequenza diacronica. Per tale ragione, si prevede di offrire le informazioni di base in maniera graduale nel corso delle singole lezioni.
No specific prerequisite is required. This is a survey course. Subjects are presented in their chronological order. For this reason, basic information will be provided gradually during each lesson.
Il corso si articola in 18 lezioni di 90 minuti ciascuna. Le presentazioni contenenti il repertorio iconografico mostrato a lezione saranno a disposizione degli studenti, insieme all’eventuale materiale didattico aggiuntivo. Ciascuna lezione terminerà con una breve discussione tra docente e studenti sui temi trattati nel corso della lezione stessa.
Il docente sarà a disposizione degli studenti per ogni eventuale chiarimento sul corso ed i suoi contenuti. L’orario di ricevimento è tutti i giovedì, dalle ore 16 alle ore 18 (studio del docente, Dipartimento di Civiltà e forme del sapere, via dei Mille 19, terzo piano, stanza 3.05).

In questo periodo, il ricevimento in ufficio è sospeso. Il docente è disponibile a ricevere gli studenti su Teams di Microsoft. L’orario rimane quello canonico, cioè giovedì dalle 16.00 alle 18.00. Per effettuare il ricevimento in questa modalità, sarà, ovviamente, necessario mettersi d’accordo precedentemente via e-mail (l’indirizzo è indicato su Valutami e Unimap). In alternativa, il docente potrà, comunque, rispondere via e-mail a qualsiasi quesito posto dagli studenti.
The course consists of 18 lectures, all provided with slide presentations. Presentations and all additional teaching materials will be available for download. Each lecture will be concluded with a brief open discussion between instructor and students on the subjects treated during the class.
The instructor will be available to clarify any questions concerning the classes. Exact office hours are from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Thursadays (instructor's office, Dipartimento di Civiltà e forme del sapere, via dei Mille 19, third floor, room 3.05).

Nel corso si tratteranno argomenti di ambito minoico, cicladico e miceneo concernenti un intervallo temporale compreso tra gli inizi del III e la fine del II millennio a.C. Nello specifico, saranno affrontati e discussi i seguenti temi:

This class is focused on subjects concerning Minoan, Cycladic, and Mycenaean civilizations between the beginning of the 3rd and the end of the 2nd millennium B.C. More specifically, lectures will discuss the following points:
Particular emphasis is placed on the complex relationship between material evidence, cultural identities, and the development of complex social and political systems.

The study of each chapter must be combined with the study of the relevant on-line illustrations.
The textbook is supplemented by the contents of the lectures (specific subjects and the iconographic repertoire enclosed in the PowerPoint presentations shown during each class; see above, Teaching methods). For the most relevant subjects treated during the course, additional readings will be recommended by the instructor. These readings are optional and will not be part of the final oral exam.

A causa delle misure per il contenimento del Covid-19, l'esame si svolgerà per via telematica, sul canale Microsoft Teams (vedi il link per l’“aula virtuale esame” nella sezione di Valutami dedicata all’esame). Bisognerà accedere con le credenziali di ateneo e presentarsi con documento d'identità e libretto universitario. L'aula virtuale si aprirà dieci minuti prima dell'orario dell'appello.

Important information concerning the exam to be held on April 17th, 2020:
Because of the measures implemented for the prevention of Covid-19, the exam will take place on-line, through a dedicated channel of Microsoft Teams (see the link to the “virtual class” in the relevant section of the Valutami website). Students need to log in using their university credentials and must carry a valid document of identification, as well as their university booklet (“libretto”). The virtual class will open ten minutes before the beginning of the exam.
Le lezioni si terranno mercoledì e giovedì in Aula Paoli B1 e, in entrambi i casi, saranno dalle ore 10:15 alle ore 11:45. Il corso comincerà mercoledì 25 settembre 2019.
