Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to examine the diachronic and synchronic evolution of the English language, starting with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of historical linguistics (linguistic change and variation, standard formation, etc.), and then focusing on the phonological, morphosyntactic, and lexical development from Germanic and Old English up to Late Modern English. The lectures will subsequently focus on the translation and linguistic reflection on texts selected from the extended epigraphic, poetic, prosaic, and normative/grammatical tradition. Knowledge and understanding:
Students will get acquainted with the fundamental lines of the development of the history of the English language from its origins to the present day, and with major evolutionary phenomena at the level of spelling, phonology, morphosyntax, and vocabulary.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
This ability will include the reading, comprehension, and contextualization of documents – from Old English to Late Modern English, as well as an improved linguistic competence and an increased metalinguistic awareness of the characteristics and use of the English language.
