The course develops a family of fundamental models (demographical, demo-economical, epidemiological) aiming to enable students to interpret some fundamental facts of the historical and current demographic landscape.
Topics
The model of age-structured populations and its fundamental results. Rejuvenation and ageing theorems. Lowest-low fertility. Ageing.
Models with spatial structure. International immigration.
Neoclassical growth and exogenous age structure. Endogenous growth and exogenous age structure. Growth with endogenous age structure. The economic impact of demographic change.
Population dynamics of infectious diseases and their control.
Childhood infectious disease, malaria, TB, AIDS. The health and wealth of Africa.
Sustainable development. The role of population and disease in the “limits to growth”.
