Learning outcomes

Transportation Systems have a major impact on people’s quality of life. Transport decreases the cost and time involved in bridging the distance gap, thus allowing social, cultural, sport, recreational and economic activities to take place at certain times and places and allowing people to participate in such activities.
Transport is the hard aspect of the new modern e- commerce and business.
Transport is the base of international trades and their development and, as a consequence, the base of the economic systems’ growth and, in case of sustainable transportation systems, their social and economic development.
The aim of the course in “Economics of Transportation Systems” is to describe the main transportation system, simple and complex, in terms of infrastructures, vehicles, logistic networks and to let emerge all economic aspects they are founded on.
That’s why we will study, namely:
- Transport Systems: Passenger transport. Cargo transport. Land transport systems, railway transport systems, maritime transport systems, airway transport systems. Intermodality..
- Transport Economics: Transportation as a derived demand. Supply of transport services and public arrangements. Transport policies. Position and significance of transport in UE economy. Cost-benefit analysis. Transportation costs and environment. Efficiency and industry structure in transport. Economics of transport congestion and pricing.
- Port and Terminal Economics: Classification of ports. Roles of ports. Infrastructures and superstructures at ports. Types of terminals and their characteristics. Handling equipments. Ship and cargo handling. Ports efficiency and competitiveness.
