Learning outcomes

Scope of the course is to present topics related to chemical plant design, that is the passage from lab operation to industrial scale equipments.
Curse content in about basic aspects, design techniques and selection criteria for several unit operations of primary significance, as synthesized in the sequel.
Flow of fluids: friction coefficient and pressure drop; power of pumps and compressors; pipes and vessels; emergency releases. Heat exchange: heat transfer mechanisms, types of heat exchangers and design techniques; condensers, evaporators and special types of exchangers; arrangements for energy saving, auxiliary fluids. Miscellaneous operations: separation of heterogeneous systems, solid transportation, crystallization, drying.
In the lab course computer codes for equipment design and graphical representation of plant schemes are used; basic aspects of measurements and control of chemical processes are also presented.
