Learning outcomes

Learn the basic knowledge concerning (i) the main petrophysical parameters used for the characterization of the reservoir rocks and (ii) the well logs suitable to make an accurate petrophysical parameter estimation. Acquire the terminology pertinent to well logging.
Physical properties of subsurface rocks (temperature, density, resistivity, etc.), their petrophysical properties (porosity, permeability, fluid saturations) and their relationships.
Relationships between resistivity, porosity and water saturation: the Archie relationships.
Fundamentals on geophysical well logs and on their main petrophysical and geological applications.
Basic information about operational problems, their impact on measurement quality and on the uncertainties on the results of quantitative interpretation (vertical resolution, depth of investigation, mud filtrate invasion, caving, etc.).
Description of the main Open Hole Logging tools for lithology interpretation (Spontaneous Potential, Gamma Ray and Gamma Ray Spectrometry), for resistivity measurements (galvanic, induction and EM wave propagation devices), for porosity evaluation (Density, Neutron, Acoustic and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) with the illustration of their physical principles, operational field and imitations, together with the basics of environmental corrections and qualitative/quantitative interpretation techniques.
