Learning outcomes
The course provides theoretical/pratical computer science skills, especially on the wordprocessing, web, data analysis.
A basic knowledge on the Windows operating system and on elementary file management operation is required.
Concerning wordprocessing, the standard functionalities and some advanced functionalities of the Microsoft Word application will be analyzed, in order to provide the necessary skills for realizing structured documents including text, images, tables, formulas, indexes, tables of matters and layouts of documents.
Concerning the web, several aspects will be dealt with, including computer networks structure, communication protocols of the nets, instruments for hypertext visualization and navigation, information retrieval on the web. This part aims at using the net as a research, job and study instrument. Moreover, the bases of HTML language for hypertext page construction will be provided
along with some open source programs for web design and production.
Concerning data analysis, two main topics will be treated: use of spreadsheets and use of databases with some references to Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access programs, and in particular Excel advanced functions, like pivot tables, for the multidimensional analysis of the data. Reference will be made to examples of problem solving in the domain of chemistry.
