Pharmaceutical technology and legislation

Credits 9
Learning outcomes
The general objectives of the course are:
- to favour the comprehension of physicochemical principles pertinent to pharmaceutical phenomena that are involved in the preparations of the dosage forms;
- to increase the aptitude in the application of technologies, upon which pharmaceutical processes are dependent, through use of modern equipments, instruments and laboratory manipulations.
The medicines are rarely drugs alone, but require additives to make them into dosage forms. The concepts of formulation and of medicine as a "drug delivery systems" will be defined in the course of pharmaceutical technology .In the course, an explanation of the more macroscopic properties of the materials, which influence the design and the manufacturing of the dosage forms, the advantages and disadvantages of the different dosage forms and information on the manufacturing processes will be explained. The objectives of the course in pharmaceutical technology cannot be achieved without a practical training. The practical laboratory skill should help the students to correlate theory to the different pharmaceutical applications. In particular, the practical training will concern the preparation of elementary pharmaceutical dosage forms and the evaluation of their quality using the standard quality tests approved and reported in the Pharmacopea. The course will be finally completed with a theoretical part on pharmacy legislation and regulation. Furthermore the students will learn the mainly procedure for the registration and of medicinal and cosmetic products.
