Providing basic knowledge for civil engineers on pollution phenomena of soil and terrestrial ecosystems and on the main techniques for: - solid-waste handling, treatment and disposal (collection and recycling, selection, chemical, mechanical and biological treatment, incineration, landfilling); - remediation of polluted soils and groundwater (environmental assessment and characterization, risk analysis, in situ and ex situ treatments with biological, chemico-physical and thermal techniques). The teaching program includes an analysis of the regulations in force in Italy and in the European Union and a technical site-visit to a waste treatment plant and/or to a polluted-site remediation facility.
