Learning outcomes

The course is composed of two parts, one on the main inherited disorders and one on management of reproduction both in dogs. The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge on the importance of inherited disorders in the dog, the application of molecular genetics in the canine breeding and the selection against inherited disorders. In addition, students should be aware of the main genetic disorders with hereditary basis of the cardiovascular, integumentary, endocrine, gastro-enteric, hematologic, immune, urinary, reproductive, osteo-skeletal, ocular and auditive apparatus. Concerning reproductive management, the student should be able to recognize the stages of a female's cycle, know the methods to choose the right time for a mating, manage natural matings, normal pregnancy and parturition in a dog, perform simple obstetrical manuality, recognise when the clinician help is needed, follow the newborns and puppies at birth and in their growth. It should also be able to assess reproductive data and recognize some factors that lead to a reduction in fertility. Finally the student will be able to communicate to collegues, veterinarians and the public using appropriate terminology.
