Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
Students will learn the main aspects of green computing and existing solutions to (a) assess and reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in ICT systems, (b) design energy-efficient hardware and software systems and (c) reduce waste and pollution due to e-waste.
Syllabus:
- Concept of sustainability and environmental impact of the life cycle of ICT systems
- Techniques to assess an ICT system in terms of carbon produced, energy sources used, overall carbon intensity, and power usage effectiveness
- Energy efficiency of ICT systems and principles of green software engineering
- e-waste, planned and perceived obsolescence
- Problems and solutions from recent literature
