Credits 6

Learning outcomes

Basic issues
Topic introduction, kinematics and motion dynamics suitable for before and after analysis of collision phases. Applied impact mechanics.
Methods to detect the context of the accident, to examine the vehicles involved and to acquire the numerical elements useful for the reconstruction of the accident.
Computer aided modeling and simulation in traffic accidents reconstruction. Processing and acquisition of reference data. The "forward" reconstructive approach, that is the reconstruction of the accident starting from the collision configuration. Study of real cases with a commercial simulation software.
Traffic accident report preparation and summary report of technical analysis.

Educational goals
The aim of the course is to offer students a multidisciplinary training in the field of analysis and reconstruction of road accidents which can be a reference and basic for the roles of technical consultant in road accidents at courts, law firms, insurance companies and in the field of vehicle construction. The most recent approaches for road accident reconstruction will be explained to the students of the course. Theoretical lessons will be followed by practical exercises on concrete cases through the use of specific simulation software.
