Learning outcomes

Molecular biology
Constituents and chemico-physical properties of the nucleic acids. Structure of the informative biological macromolecules and methods for their study. Mechanisms of the DNA replication, of transcription and maturation of the RNA and synthesis of the proteins. Regulation of the gene expression. Methodologies of analysis and manipulation of the informative molecules. Recombinant DNA: restriction enzymes, molecular cloning (vectors, methods of libraries screening ), PCR, DNA sequencing; methods of analysis of the transcript .

General and Analytical Microbiology.
The student who completes the course successfully will demonstrate a knowledge of the main issues related to microbial characterization and analysis. The student will be aware of microbial biology and physiology, of techniques useful for microbial control, of standard and advanced analytical techniques suitable for identification and quantification of microbes. Bacterial genetics. Molecular basis of microbial virulence and pathogenicity.
