Learning outcomes

The course will provide the basic knowledge on the principal characteristics of the polymer systems, the methods of molecular weight determinations, the different polymerization techniques, and the main parameters affecting the polymerization kinetics.
The course will also provide the principles of technology of polymeric mataerials:
Properties of synthetic polymers for formulation and processing of simple and composite materials.
Amorphous and semicrystalline polymers. Structure-property relationships: molecular parameters affecting the Tg of a polymer. The crystallinity of polymeric materials: ordered structure, crystalline cells, lamellar crystals, spherulites. Thermodynamic melting temperature: enthalpic and entropic factors.
The viscoelastic behaviour of polymeric materials.
Processing of polymeric materials: thermoplastic, thermosetting and composite materials.
Therefore, the student will acquire the fundamental aspects of polymer chemistry, the chemical-physical properties, the synthesis-structure relationships, and the technological aspects of the macromolecules as polymeric systems and materials.
