Learning outcomes

The Course aims to promote the acquisition of the English language with output training objectives comparable to the fourth level of English, according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Language); therefore, a level at least intermediate or high, to develop in the student the various skills of reading, comprehension, translation and production (oral and written). During the course, specific language exercises will be proposed with the further aim of providing the student with the basics of "Academic English", i.e., writing texts and reports in a correct, clear and simple way. The course will focus on two aspects 1. The acquisition of specialised language, i.e., in semantic fields that are particularly relevant to the master degree in sociology and social services management, such as immigration, comparative law and the global economy. 2. The key "Critical Discourse Analysis" perspectives will be introduced in order to promote students’ understanding of the social construction of "news" in the English-speaking mass media systems.
