Foucault notes that in the Kant of What is Enlightenment? the metaphor of Ausgang, of the exit ("Enlightenment is the exit of man from the state of minority". Kant evokes the exit from the cave of Plato's prisoner), stands out. From this point of view, however, the Vichian idea of a present that shows itself as the dawn of a historical accomplishment appears far less distant than what Foucault thinks of the Ausgang image evoked by Kant. If in fact the Aufklärungis an exit, this can be the symbol of the passage towards the possibility of a historical fulfillment. But it is precisely a possibility, not a necessary first step in a process whose path and goal are already known. In Kant this possibility, which in any case is one of the possibilities, depends on the will. Everything is postponed to the will of the subject, or, rather, everything is referred to the ability of the individual to pass (to want to pass) from freedom to autonomy. In Vico, there is history and the way we (men, peoples, nations, not just individuals) do and know it; there is the probable and the way the will of men is intertwined with myths and beliefs. In Vico, as it will then be in Marx, the ability to move from freedom to human autonomy depends not only on the individual will but also on the collective and cooperative processes that are established in history.
