Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito le conoscenze basilari di storia del teatro antico, per quanto attiene le figure dei principali autori e le loro opere, la realtà fisica dell'edificio teatrale antico e le componenti di base della prassi teatrale in Grecia e a Roma (attori, coro, maschere, generi drammatici e loro caratteristiche strutturali, convenzioni teatrali, ecc.)
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the history of ancient theater (both from the archeological and the literary point of view); he/she will be aware of the development of the main literary expressions of Greek and Roman theatre (tragedy, comedy, satyric drama) and of the most relevant Greek and Latin authors; he/she will have the ability to read an ancient theatrical text in a modern translation by correctly setting it in its historical and cultural context and by making a comparison with his/her own experience of modern theatre practice.
L'acquisizione delle conoscenze sopra indicate sarà verificata, oltre che attraverso l'esame, anche attraverso l'interlocuzione con gli studenti nel corso della lettura dei testi drammatici antichi prescelti.
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. He/she will also be assessed on his/her ability to describe his/her personal response to the reading of an ancient text.

Al termine del corso lo studente sarà capace di affrontare in modo autonomo la lettura di un testo teatrale antico in traduzione e di collocarlo correttamente nel contesto storico-culturale che lo ha prodotto; sarà in grado di ricostruire per punti principali la storia del teatro antico, mettendone in evidenza le caratteristichge principali. Sarà inoltre in grado di individuare il contributo che i diversi tipi di fonti danno alla ricostruzione delle vicende storiche del teatro antico.
At the end of the course the student will be able to deal autonomously with the reading of an ancient theatrical text in translation and to place it correctly in the historical-cultural context that produced it; will be able to reconstruct the history of ancient theater for main points, highlighting its main features. It will also be able to identify the contribution that the different types of sources give to the reconstruction of the historical events of the ancient theater.
Lo studente dovrà saper esporre le linee principali della storia del teatro antico, degli elementi spiegati a lezione, delle fonti che sno state oggetto di esegesi.
The student will have to know how to expose the main lines of the history of the ancient theater, of the sources that have been object of exegesis.
Lo studente dovrà acquisire familiarità con la terminologia tecnica relativa al teatro antico, sia nel campo storico-drammaturgico che in quello archeologico e antropologico, e saper analizzare correttamente le fonti in base alle loro caratteristiche specifiche.
The student should become familiar with the technical terminology related to ancient theater, both in the historical-dramaturgical field and in the archaeological and anthropological field, and be able to correctly analyze the sources according to their specific characteristics.
Durante le lezioni saranno proiettate immagini di documenti iconografici e archeologici antichi, nonché frammenti di testimonianze e testi che gli studenti dovranno analizzare assieme alla docente.
During the lessons will be projected images of ancient iconographic and archaeological documents, as well as fragments of testimonies and texts that students will have to analyze together with the teacher.
La natura del corso, che si rivolge a studenti di diversa provenienza, non richiede specifiche conoscenze pregresse.
The nature of the course, which is aimed at students of different backgrounds, does not require specific prior knowledge.
Maschere femminili comiche e tragiche
Il corso prevede un’introduzione ai problemi di metodo e alle conoscenze fondamentali relative al teatro antico (fonti testuali e iconografiche, autori e opere, edifici teatrali greci e romani, attori, coro, costumi, maschere, natura della rappresentazione antica, contesto culturale e rituale, generi drammatici).
Verranno poi affrontati genesi e sviluppo della maschera teatrale greca connettendo l’uso di questo “strumento” attoriale alla lettura e all’analisi di tragedie e commedie particolarmente significative per una riflessione sul tema proposto.
Sarà chiesta dunque la conoscenza delle seguenti opere (in traduzione italiana), che saranno oggetto di studio a lezione: Aristofane: Le donne alle Tesmoforie, Le donne al Parlamento, Lisistrata; Sofocle, Antigone; Euripide, Medea.
The course is articulated in two parts: 1) A general survey of the main subjects relating to the history of ancient theatre (literary and archeological sources, form and development of ancient theatrical buildings in Greek and Roman world,ancient actors and choruses, masks, costumes, scenic arrangements and theatrical conventions); 2) Commented reading of one or more ancient tragic or comic texts. The lecturer will help the students in appreciating both the difficulties arising from the historical and cultural distance of the texts and the elements of continuity which allow modern readers to enjoy the deep emotional dimension of the ancient plays.
The following dramas will be analyzed during the course: Aristofane: Le donne alle Tesmoforie, Le donne al Parlamento, Lisistrata; Sofocle, Antigone; Euripide, Medea.

- Falossi – F. Mastropasqua, La poesia della maschera. Una testa vuota come fonte di conoscenza, Torino, Prinp 2015;
- Di Benedetto - E. Medda, La tragedia sulla scena,Torino, Einaudi 2002 (p. 7-77 e 163-311 omettendo, per ogni capitolo, le parti di Note e discussioni);

Gli studenti che intendono sostenere l'esame da non frequentanti devono presentarsi di persona al ricevimento del docente con un congruo anticipo (almeno un mese) sulla data d'esame per definire i dettagli del programma.
Students who intend to take the exam not attending must present themselves in person upon receipt of the teacher with a reasonable advance (at least one month) on the exam date to define the details of the program.
L'esame consiste in un colloquio in parte condotto dalla docente. Verrano poste domande a partire dal materiale utilizzato a lezione, ed è previsto che vengano commentati gli aspetti principali delle fonti teatrali prescelte per l'anno in corso. L'esame si considera superato se il candidato risponde correttamente a un congruo numero di domande, utilizzando una terminologia tecnicamente corretta e mostrando di saper connettere fra di loro i vari argomenti trattati in un quadro coerente.
The exam consists of an interview in part conducted by the teacher. Questions will be asked starting from the iconographic and textual material used in class, and the main aspects of the chosen theatrical sources for the current year will be discussed. The exam is considered passed if the candidate correctly answers a large number of questions, using a technically correct terminology and showing to know how to connect the various topics treated in a coherent framework.
