Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze specifiche nell'ambito della letteratura greca antica, più in particolare, su un testo assegnato che verrà tradotto e commentato di fronte agli altri partecipanti e al docente, sulla base di una ricerca scientifica autonoma.
Students will acquire a specific knowledge in the field of ancient Greek literature, more specifically, they will be able to conduct an indipendent research on an assigned text and translate and comment it in a seminar.
Le conoscenze saranno verificate nell'ambito di discussioni con il docente e gli altri partecipanti al seminario.
Ongoing assessment to monitor academic progress will be carried out during the seminar.
Al termine del corso, lo studente sarà in grado di analizzare sul piano linguistico, filologico, letterario, in base ad una ricerca scientifica autonoma, un testo della letteratura greca antica e rendere conto in modo adeguato dei risultati di tale ricerca.
By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze a text of ancient Greek literature with particular attention to linguistic, philological and literary problems and present the results of their research to the class.

Retorica e letteratura nella Sui sofisti di Alcidamante
Erede della lezione della sofistica del V secolo, autore spesso non considerato con la dovuta attenzione, Alcidamante è in realtà una voce molto importante nel dibattito sull’insegnamento e la pratica dell’arte del discorso che coinvolge nei primi decenni del IV secolo anche Platone e Isocrate. Nell’orazione Sugli autori di discorsi scritti o sui sofisti, molto probabilmente il più antico testo conservato in cui sia attestato il termine rhetorike, il sofista di Elea offre una presentazione della propria paideia sviluppando un’attenta riflessione sul problema del rapporto tra logos scritto e logos improvvisato, tra oralità e produzione letteraria, che culmina in una peculiare dottrina del kairos. Con il contributo degli allievi e con il dibattito in aula, il seminario cercherà di analizzare i principali aspetti letterari, linguistici e retorici dell’orazione.
In vista dell’esame finale gli studenti leggeranno e tradurranno inoltre il Fedro di Platone.
As epigonal heir to the fifth-century sophists, Alcidamas has not often been given the attention he deserves. On the contrary, he has played a significant part in the debate, that also involved Plato and Isocrates, on the teaching and the practice of the art of discourse in the first decades of the fourth century. The course will focus on the oration On Those who Write Written Speeches or On Sophists, most likely the oldest preserved text where the term rhetorike is attested. Here, the sophist from Elea offers a presentation of his own paideia by developing a careful reflection on the problem of the relationship between written and improvised logos, between orality and literature, culminating in a specific doctrine of kairos. Thanks to the contribution of the students and to the debate in class, the seminar will try to analyze the main literary, linguistic, and rhetorical aspects of this fundamental text.
For the final exam the student will be asked to read and translate Plato’s Phaedrus.

L'esame si svolgerà in due fasi: 1) L’esposizione durante il seminario della propria ricerca, seguita da discussione con tutti i partecipanti e con il docente; 2) la verifica, in sede finale di esame, della capacità di tradurre e commentare brani del secondo testo in programma.
The assessment consists of two moments: 1. The seminar given and discussed in front of the group; 2. The final examinations, during which each student is supposed to scan metrically, read, translate and comment a passage taken from Plato’s Phaedrus.
