Il corso vuole offrire allo studente una visione d'insieme della storia e della civiltà del subcontinente Indiano partendo dalle testimonianze vediche (c.a 1500 aC) fino all'epoca Gupta (c.a 500 DC). L'obbiettivo principale è quello che lo studente apprenda i punti di riferimenti storici e culturali principali, familiarizzandosi anche con i principali strumenti di ricerca con cui iniziare ad affrontare lo studio dell'India antica.
Il corso prevede anche una decina di ore di corso monografico nel corso del quale si approfondirà un aspetto specifico, che varia di anno in anno. Per l'anno academico 2022-23 l'argomento sarà: Profetizzando il passato: lo Yugapurāṇa e la visione Brahmanica dei regni Indo-Greci e Sciti
The course aims to provide the student with an overview of the history and civilisation of the Indian subcontinent starting from the Vedic records (c.a 1500 BC) up to the Gupta period (c.a 500 AD). The main objective is for the student to learn the main historical and cultural points of reference, while also becoming familiar with the main research tools with which to begin the study of ancient India.
The course also includes a ten-hour monographic course in which a specific aspect, which varies from year to year, will be explored in depth. For the academic year 2022-23, the topic will be: Sacred geography: the identification of the sacrificial area in the late Vedic texts

Lo studente imparerà a contestualizzare e interpretare informazioni e dati nel contesto più ampio della storia del subcontinente imparando a fare uso di lessici, enciclopedie, cataloghi, testi (in traduzione) etc.
The student will learn to contextualise and interpret information and data in the broader context of the history of the subcontinent by learning to make use of lexicons, encyclopaedias, catalogues, texts (in translation) etc.
Nel corso del semestre verrà richiesto un breve elaborato (3/5) pagine di commento e contestualizzazione di un dato a scelta fra quelli forniti dalla docente: un passo letterario (in traduzione), un'immagine etc.
During the semester, a short paper (3/5) pages will be required to comment on and contextualise a piece of data of your choice provided by the lecturer: a literary passage (in translation), an image, a map, etc.
Lo studente si muoverà con sicurezza all'interno delle istituzioni pisane e non solo così come imparerà a utilizzare e valutare appieno le risorse disponibili in rete
The student will move confidently within the cultural institutions of Pisa and beyond as well as learn to use and fully evaluate the resources available on the web

The course develops excellent synergies with a number of teachings in a) Iranistics b) history and epigraphy c) history of religions.
Gli studi successivi per l'area indiana, in particolare qualora si voglia elaborare una tesi nel settore, prevedono di frequentare Sanscrito 1 e (per la magistrale) Sanscrito 2.
Subsequent studies for the Indian area, particularly if one wishes to develop a thesis in the field, involve taking Sanskrit 1 and (for the master's degree) Sanskrit 2.
La partecipazione e la possibilità di ritagliarsi tempo per il lavoro casalingo sono fondamentali.
Participation and the ability to spare time for homework are crucial.
Il corso si suddivide in tre parti principali:
1) Le fonti: presentazione delle principali fonti: letterarie, epigrafiche, materiali. Riflessioni sui modi della trasmissione culturale nell'India antica.
2) Status quaestions su alcuni punti di riferimento storici principali: la migrazione indo-aria, le culture vediche, la riforma brahmanica, il gandhara e il buddhismo.
3) Lingua e culture vediche (lingue, testi, riti)
4) Monografico : Profetizzando il passato: lo Yugapurāṇa e la visione Brahmanica dei regni Indo-Greci e Sciti. Testi in traduzione proposti dalla docente.
The course is divided into three main parts:
1) The sources: presentation of the main sources: literary, epigraphic, material. Reflections on the modes of cultural transmission in ancient India.
2) Status quaestionis on some main historical reference points: Indo-Aryan migration, Vedic cultures, Brahmanical reform, Gandhara and Buddhism.
3) Vedic language and cultures (languages, texts, rites)
4) Monograph: Sacred geography: identification of the ritual area in late Vedic texts. Texts in translation proposed by the lecturer.
