Lo studente acquisirà conoscenze elementari di lingua ittita e della scrittura cuneiforme adottata dalla cancelleria ittita.
Lo studente acquisirà inoltre conoscenze relative alla società, storia, e cultura ittita, inquadrandole nel contesto generale del panorama della Storia del Vicino Oriente della seconda metà del secondo millennio a.C.
The main goal of this course is to provide students with a solid knowledge of the language of the Hittites, as well as the cuneiform writing system adopted by the Hittite chancery between the 17th and the 12th century BCE.
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the emergence of the Hittites, their history and cultural aspects. The student should demonstrate the ability to define a historiographical or cultural problem and present the results in a structured way.
L'acquisizione delle conoscenze verrà verificata durante l'esame finale in forma orale e scritta.
During the oral examination the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the Hittite history and language, as well as discuss related matters thoughtfully using an appropriate terminology.

Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito solide competenze di storia, società e cultura degli ittiti. Lo studente sarà quindi in grado di utilizzare tutti gli strumenti principali per la comprensione dei meccanismi della società degli ittiti, e avrà sopratutto una solida base per l'analisi dei testi in lingua ittita e scrittura cuneiforme.
By the end of this introductory course the student will have got solid rudiments of history, society and culture of the Hittites. The student will be, therefore, able to master the tools for the understanding of the mechanism of the Hittite society, and he/she will have got the basis of the language and scripture of the Hittites.

Verifia scritta delle competenze di lingua e scrittura ittita, attraverso l'analisi di alcuni passi scelti della letteratura ittita.

Additional brief written examination to test the basic knowledge of the Hittite language and cuneiform writing system.
Lo studente saprà approcciarsi criticamente a fonti letterari ittite di vario genere, dalla storigrafia all'annalistica, dalla mitologia alla tradizione rituale.
Durante l'esame finale sarà richiesta l'analisi di alcuni passi della letteratura ittita, con un commento approfondito delle fonti presentate durante il corso.
During the final examination the student will be asked to analyze some passages of the Hittite literature treated over the course.
Se possibile, conoscenza elementare di scrittura cuneiforme.
Elementary knowledge of cuneiform writing system, if possible.

Il corso di Ittitologia si prefigge lo scopo di introdurre gli studenti alla storia, cultura e civiltà dell’Anatolia pre-classica, dalle fasi formative del regno ittita, sino alla disgregazione dell’Impero al tornante del XIII secolo a.C. Durante il corso saranno presentate le principali fonti testuali, la cui contestualizzazione sarà utile allo studente per delineare i tratti principali della storia, cultura, religione e società ittita.
In ogni ora dedicata alla storia ittita verranno presentate:
- Informazioni sulla società, amministrazione e diplomazia ittita
- Panoramica geo-politica in relazione ai grandi regni del VOA durante il II millennio a.C.
- Informazioni su religione, feste istituzionali e rituali
- Informazioni su mitologia e letteratura
- Informazioni su Corpora testuali
In ogni ora dedicata alla lingua ittita verranno presentati:
- Nomi e aggettivi
- Pronomi
- Sistema verbale
- Sintassi, morfologia e semantica
- Fonologia
- Eterogrammi, Sumerogrammi e Accadogrammi
- Segni cuneiformi
Hittite is a member of the Anatolian branch of the Indo-European family, and the earliest attested Indo-European language. Anatolian is generally regarded as the first branch to have separated from the other Indo-European languages. Aside from Hittite it includes Luwian (Cuneiform and Hieroglyphic) and Palaic, all from the second millennium BC, and Hieroglyphic Luwian, Lycian, Lydian, and the scantily attested Carian, Pisidian, and Sidetic in the first millennium BC.
The teaching programme covers second millennium BCE Anatolia, the emergence of Hittite polities and the Hittite Empire, the Hittite conquests in South-eastern Turkey and Syria, Hittite culture, religion, and literarure. Attention will be paid to their relationship with Hurrian and other contemporary cultures. During classes will be presented general information on geography and archaeology of Central and Eastern Turkey.
The course is also designed to be a useful tool for students who want to have an introductory overview of the elements of the Hittite language and writing. It gives the necessary cultural and historical background as well as suggestions for further readings. It also explains the principles of the cuneiform writing system used by the Hittites. In every lesson are presented:
- Nouns and adjectives
- Pronouns
- Verbs
- Syntax, semantics, word formation
- Phonology
- Sumerian and Akkadian, etherograms
- Cuneiform signs.
