Conoscenze

Il modulo “Neural Tissue Engineering” ha l’obiettivo di far acquisire agli studenti le conoscenze e gli strumenti metodologici caratteristici della ingegneria tissutale relativa al settore neurale ed in particolare relative allo sviluppo di sistemi in vitro ed in vitro per la rigenerazione nervosa.

Il modulo “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine” ha l’obiettivo di far acquisire agli studenti le conoscenze e gli strumenti metodologici caratteristici della neuroingegneria ed in particolare relative allo sviluppo di sistemi impiantabili per il recupero di funzioni sensoriali e motorie e di sistemi per la “medicina bioelettronica”.

Knowledge

The "Neural Tissue Engineering" module aims to provide the students with the knowledge and the methodological tools characteristic of tissue engineering related to the neural sector and in particular concerning the development of in vitro and in vitro systems for nervous regeneration.

 

The module “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine” has the aim of providing students with the knowledge and methodological tools characteristic of neuroengineering and in particular concerning the development of implantable systems for the recovery of sensory and motor functions and systems for "bioelectronic medicine".

Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

Nel modulo “Neural Tissue Engineering”, verrà richiesto agli studenti di analizzare una problematica della neural tissue engineering tramite l'analisi dello stato dell'arte. Tale analisi condotta dallo studente sarà integrata dalla valutazione orale delle conoscenze acquisite durante il corso.

Nel modulo “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, verrà richiesto agli studenti di elaborare un projectual work nel quale affrontare e risolvere problemi scientifici e tecnologici inerenti gli obiettivi del corso. Per l’accertamento delle conoscenze, relativamente a tale projectual work, saranno svolti degli incontri tra il docente e gli studenti che sviluppano il progetto, in modo da indirizzare opportunamente il lavoro. In sede d’esame, la verifica delle conoscenze riguarderà sia l’esposizione del projectual work che la valutazione orale delle conoscenze acquisite durante il corso.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

In the Neural Tissue Engineering module, students will be asked to analyze a problem of neural tissue engineering by analyzing the state of the art. Such student analysis will be supplemented by the oral assessment of the knowledge gained during the course.

 

Students will be required to work out a projectual work in which they will address and solve scientific and technological issues related to the course objectives. For the assessment of the knowledge, in relation to such projectual work, meetings will be held between the teacher and the students who develop the project, so as to properly address the work. At the exam, the knowledge verification will cover both projectual work exposure and oral assessment of the knowledge gained during the course.

Capacità

Per quanto riguarda il modulo “Neural Tissue Engineeering”, al termine del corso lo studente:

  • Sarà in possesso delle conoscenze principali riguardanti lo sviluppo di sistemi in vitro and in vivo neuronali
  • Sarà in grado di orientarsi nella letteratura scientifica riguardante i suddetti argomenti;
  • Sarà in grado di formulare ipotesi innovative in questo ambito e di prevedere quale sia il set di esperimenti più opportuno per validarla. Sarà inoltre in grado di esporre queste conoscenze in forma di presentazione organizzata.

Per quanto riguarda il modulo “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, al termine del corso lo studente:

  • Sarà in possesso delle conoscenze principali riguardanti lo sviluppo di interfacce neurali con il sistema nervoso centrale e periferico e di sistemi neuroprotesici e per medicina bioelettronica
  • Sarà in grado di orientarsi nella letteratura scientifica riguardante i suddetti argomenti;
  • Sarà in grado di formulare ipotesi innovative in questo ambito e di prevedere quale sia il set di esperimenti più opportuno per validarla. Sarà inoltre in grado di esporre queste conoscenze in forma di presentazione organizzata.
Skills

As for the "Neural Tissue Engineeering" module, at the end of the course the student:
• Maintain the knowledge about the development of neuronal and in vivo neuronal systems
• It will be able to orient itself in the scientific literature regarding the above topics;
• It will be able to formulate innovative hypotheses in this field and to predict which set of experiments is best for validating it. It will also be able to expose this knowledge in the form of organized presentation.

 

Concerning the module “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, at the end of the course the student:

  • will possess the main knowledge on the development of neural interfaces with the central and peripheral nervous system and neuroprotectional systems and bioelectronic medicine
    • will be able to orient himself/herself in the scientific literature regarding the above topics;
    • will be able to formulate innovative hypotheses in this field and to predict which set of experiments is best for validating it. The student will also be able to expose this knowledge in the form of organized presentation.
Modalità di verifica delle capacità

Nel modulo “Neural Tissue Engineering”, gli strumenti utilizzati consisteranno in:

  • Attività pratiche su caratterizzazione di biomateriali e loro processamento;
  • Analisi dello stato dell'arte della neural tissue engineering;
  • Lo studente dovrà preparare una presentazione organizzata mediante la quale dovrà esporre l’idea e il set di esperimenti previsto nell’ambito del suo projectual work.

 

Nel modulo “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, gli strumenti utilizzati consisteranno in:

  • Attività pratiche su elaborazione di segnali neurali, biomeccanica del movimento, controlli automatici;
  • Banche dati al fine di identificare lo stato dell’arte più vicino all’idea progettuale proposta dallo studente;
  • Lo studente dovrà preparare una presentazione organizzata mediante la quale dovrà esporre l’idea e il set di esperimenti previsto nell’ambito del suo projectual work.
Assessment criteria of skills

In the "Neural Tissue Engineering" module, the tools used will consist of:
• Practical activities on the characterization of biomaterials and their processing;
• State of the art of neural tissue engineering;
• The student will have to prepare an organized presentation through which he will have to expose the idea and set of experiments planned in his projectual work.

In the module “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, the instruments used will consist of:

  • Practical activities on the processing of neural signals, movement biomechanics, automatic controls;
    • Scientific databases to identify the state of the art closest to the design idea proposed by the student;
    • The student will have to prepare an organized presentation through which he/she will have to expose the idea and set of experiments planned within his projectual work.

  • Sensibilità nei confronti della formulazione di idee progettuali innovative nell’ambito della Neural Tissue Engineering;
  • Sensibilità nello svolgere esperimenti di Neural Tissue Engineering in varie condizioni sperimentali;
  • Competenze e sensibilità riguardanti lo sviluppo di modelli in vitro ed in vivo per applicazioni nel settore della Neural Tissue Engineering.

Nel modulo “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, i comportamenti che si ritiene lo studente possa acquisire sono:

  • Sensibilità nei confronti della formulazione di idee progettuali innovative nell’ambito della neuroingegneria e della medicina bioelettronica;

In the "Neural Tissue Engineering" module, behaviors that the student thinks can be acquired are:
• Sensitivity to the design of innovative design ideas within Neural Tissue Engineering;
• Sensitivity in carrying out experiments of Neural Tissue Engineering under various experimental conditions;
• Skills and sensitivity regarding the development of in vitro and in vivo models for applications in the Neural Tissue Engineering sector.

 

In the module “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, the attitudes that the student is thought to acquire are:

  • Sensitivity towards formulating innovative design ideas in neuro-engineering and bioelectronics medicine;
    • Sensitivity in performing neuro-engineering experiments in various experimental conditions;
    • Skills and sensitivity regarding implantable technologies for the recovery of sensory, motor and cognitive functions and for bioelectronic medicine.
Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

Per entrambi i moduli, gli strumenti utilizzati per accertare l’acquisizione dei comportamenti attesi saranno:

  • Interazioni con i docenti nel corso della preparazione dei projectual work, per valutare la solidità e innovatività delle ipotesi formulate;
  • Misure effettuate nel corso delle sessioni di laboratorio, allo scopo di valutare il grado di accuratezza delle attività svolte;
  • Domande rivolte agli studenti nel corso delle lezioni frontali, per verificare l’acquisizione e il consolidamento di certi concetti.
Assessment criteria of behaviors

In both modules, the instruments used to assess if the students gathered the expected attitudes are:

  • Interactions with the teacher during the projectual work preparation, to evaluate the solidity and novelty of the formulated hypotheses;
  • Measurements performed during practical lab activities, aiming at evaluate the accuracy of the activities carried out by the students;
  • Questions posed to the students during the frontal classes, to evaluate the acquisition and consolidation of certain concepts.
Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Per seguire il corso in modo proficuo, non sono richieste conoscenze specialistiche da parte degli studenti. Tuttavia, sono necessarie conoscenze consolidate di base di fisica e matematica. Sono inoltre utili, anche se non strettamente necessarie, conoscenze relative a meccanica, elettronica, ed alla e biologia.

Prerequisites

To profitably attend this course, no specialistic knowledge is required. However, consolidated competences of physics and mathematics are needed. In addition, useful (even if not strictly needed) competences concern mecahnics, electronics, and biology.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Per quanto riguarda entrambi i moduli, le indicazioni metodologiche sono le seguenti:

  • Le lezioni si svolgeranno in forma alternata alla lavagna e utilizzando slide proiettate, con l’ausilio anche di animazioni e video;
  • Le esercitazioni in laboratorio si svolgeranno facendo svolgere ad ogni studente specifiche operazioni;
  • Le lezioni saranno disponibili in formato elettronico (file pdf) sul un folder accessibile dagli studenti;
  • L’interazione tra studente e docente avverrà mediante scambi e-mail o fissando degli appuntamenti su richiesta, per ricevimenti e richieste di chiarimenti sul projectual work;
  • Si prevede lo sviluppo di un projectual work da parte di ogni studente;
  • La lingua utilizzata nel corso delle lezioni e delle attività di laboratorio sarà sempre l’inglese.

 

 

Teaching methods

Concerning both modules, the methodological indications are:

  • The classes will be carried out in an alternated way at the blackboard and by means of projected slides, also with the help of animations and videos;
  • Practical lab activities will be carried out by asking students to carry out specific tasks;
  • Lessons will be available in electronic format (pdf files) on a web folder accessible by students;
  • The teacher/student interaction will be based on e-mail exchanges or by setting meetings on demand, for discussing topics touched during the course and clarifications on the projectual work;
  • A projectual work is expected from each student;
  • The language used during all classes and practical activities is English.

Per quanto riguarda il modulo “Neural Tissue Engineering”, i contenuti dell’insegnamento sono i seguenti:

  • Cenni di fisiologia del sistema nervoso
  • I biomateriali nel settore della neural tissue engineering
  • Tecniche di micro e nano fabbricazione bidimensionali e tridimensionali di scaffold
  • Metodiche di caratterizzazione chimico-fisica, meccanica e biologica degli scaffold e dei biomateriali
  • Analisi di alcuni modelli in vitro ed in vivo nel settore della neural tissue engineering
Syllabus

As for the "Neural Tissue Engineering" module, the contents of the teaching are as follows:
• Nervous system physiology
• Biomaterials in the field of neural tissue engineering
• Two-dimensional and three-dimensional scaffold micro and nano manufacturing techniques
• Methods of chemical-physical, mechanical and biological characterization of scaffolds and biomaterials
• Analysis of some in vitro and in vivo models in neural tissue engineering

 

For the module “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, the course topics are the following:

  • Microfabrication bases for the development of neural interfaces (4 hours)
    • Motor control of upper limb and hand movements (4 hours)
    • Motor control of locomotion (4 hours)
    • Computational models for motor control (4 hours)
    • Central and peripheral neural interfaces (6 hours)
    • Bidirectional central human-machine interfaces (4 hours)
    • Peripheral and indirect bidirectional human-machine interfaces (4 hours)
    • Central and peripheral motor neuroprostheses (4 hours)
    • Deep brain stimulation and sensory neuroproteses (4 hours)
    • Robot-neuroprostheses hybrid systems (2 hours)
    • Bioelectronic medicine (10 hours)

Modalità d'esame

Per quanto riguarda il modulo “Neural Tissue Engineering”, le modalità d’esame sono le seguenti:

  • L’esame è costituito da una prova orale;
  • la prova orale sarà basata sulla presentazione dell'analisi di una tematica tipica della neural tissue engineering e sulle competenze acquisite

 

Per quanto riguarda il modulo “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, le modalità d’esame sono le seguenti:

  • L’esame è costituito da una prova orale;
  • La prova orale consiste in un colloquio tra il candidato e il docente e altri collaboratori del docente titolare. La prima parte del colloquio si focalizza sul projectual work: il candidato espone la propria idea progettuale, lo stato dell’arte di riferimento e il set di esperimenti necessario per validare l’idea proposta; il docente fa domande sul piano di lavoro proposto. La seconda parte del colloquio è basata su domande allo studente su argomenti toccati durante il corso. La durata media del colloquio è di circa 30 min per ogni studente;
  • La prova orale è superata se il candidato si dimostra capace di esporre in modo chiaro e conciso il proprio projectual work, se è in grado di rispondere con padronanza e metodo alle osservazioni dei docenti sul projectual work e se risponde in modo corretto alla maggior parte delle domande poste dai docenti riguardanti gli argomenti del corso.
Assessment methods

As regards the "Neural Tissue Engineering" module, the examination methods are as follows:
• The examination consists of an oral test;
• The oral test will be based on the presentation of the analysis of a typical topic of neural tissue engineering and acquired skills

 

For the module “Neural Interfaces and Bioelectronic Medicine”, the exam modality is the following:

  • The exam will be based on an oral examination.
  • The oral examination consists of a discussion between the student and the teacher, together with his assistants. The first part of the examination is focused on the projectual work: the candidate present the project idea and the set of experiments needed to validate it; the teacher and his collaborators ask questions on the proposed work plan. The second part of the examination is based on questions to the student, on topics touched during the course. The average duration of the examination is about 30 min for each student.
  • The oral examination is passed if the student demonstrates ability to present in a clear and concise way his/her projectual work, if he/she is able to reply with mastery and showing a proper method to the questions posed by the teachers on the projectual work and if he/she replies in a correct way to the majority of the questions posed by the teachers concerning the course topics.
