Conoscenze

Knowledge

The main objective of the course is to provide an overview of issues related to environmental sustainability, with a focus on the aqueous phase, through lectures, class discussions of case studies, seminars and exercises.

In particular, the relationship between the quality of water resources and anthropogenic activities will be explored, highlighting the need for new management approaches. The course will allow to gain the inter-disciplinary skills necessary to  tackle water resources protection and conservation, and to collaborate with planners, managers and sustainability professionals.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

At the end of this course, those who have successfully passed the exam will have obtained the necessary tools to analyze the problems associated with the quality of water resources and identify the main issues and strategies relating to the link between water and sustainability.

Skills

At the end of the course students will have gained skills in the following areas:

  • quality analysis and responsible use of water resources
  • water resources protection
  • analysis of the link between water resources and society

Assessment criteria of skills

The verification of the skills acquired will take place through the study of practical cases, the development and discussion of small projects based on literature data and on the practical activity carried out during the exercises in class.

The final exam will consist in the preparation of a written report and related oral discussion. The subject of the report will be agreed with the instructor.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Acquire and/develop sensitivity to environmental issues and the relationships between society and environment, with particular focus on water resources.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

The exercises and the final exam will be targeted to verify the skills learned and behaviors.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

The course could be delivered in English upon request from Erasmus students.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The lectures will be characterized by a high level of interaction and involvement of the participants. Interdisciplinary seminars (in English) will also be organized.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The main topics covered in the course will be:

  •  Water quality and an introduction to the concept of sustainability of water resources (eg IWRM and the pillars of sustainability): theory, evolution of the concept and case studies.
  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of hydrochemistry in achieving goal 6 ("ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all").
  • Introduction to the determination of background values in groundwater.
  • Water resources in the Anthropocene and planetary boundaries for water: analysis of anthropogenic perturbations on the cycles of the elements and effects on water contamination.
  • Water resources and the “tragedy of common goods” (definitions, criticisms and practical examples).
  • The protection of water resources: from the legislation for the protection of quality to the governance approach.
  • The water-food-energy nexus and the effects of the “green revolution” on water contamination.
  • Inter and trans-disciplinary approaches: socio-hydrology, socio-hydrogeology, geoethics and gender issues related to water resources.
  • Water quality in Tuscany: case studies and exercises.
