Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The course is aimed at providing the student with the basic principles of the responses of higher plants to the environment. The first part addresses the acquisition of mineral nutrients by the plant: the dynamics of the elements in the soil and the plastic responses of the plants to nutrient availability. Subsequently, plant water relations are examined: regulation of water absorption, transport and transpiration in plants, and adaptation and acclimation to water deficiency. Finally, the course focuses on the ecophysiology of photosynthesis: the responses to solar radiation and CO2, photoinhibition and the analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence are the most relevant subjects covered. Outdoor and laboratory activities expand student knowledge and skills.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of an oral interview between the student and one or two teachers. The interview lasts thirty minutes on average, but a longer time may be required to assess more accurately the level of knowledge and to give the student the opportunity to achieve a good grade, which is on a scale of 30. It is important to demonstrate the ability to connect some arguments between them, when this is necessary to answer a question. Knowledge of the basic theory of operation of the instruments that were used in the field/laboratory activities is also required. Part of the interview may deal with the analytical discussion of a scientific paper, if this has been previously agreed between the student and the teacher.
