Syllabus

Multiculturalism, Power sharing, and Cooperation examines how political power-sharing strategies supported by International Organizations have been used to solve contemporary problems in divided societies.  First, it will provide a basic understanding of the role played by the International Organizations in countries effected by deep societal divisions.  Second, it will focus on empirical cases of power-sharing in a variety of multicultural settings, where the major segments of the society have received a permanent share of power.  Recent examples of power-sharing are presented as a mean to promote both international cooperation and social relations in conflict settings, with specific attention paid to societies in Lebanon, Iraq and Northern Ireland. The overarching goal of the course is to enable students to evaluate the ways that conflict resolution tools have been used, in divided societies too, and to analyse and critique objections and challenges to these methodologies.
