Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a general understanding of the fundamentals of structural mechanics. In particular, the student will have a good knowledge of classical elastic beam theory. Hence, the student will be able to solve simple problems concerning both statically determinate and indeterminate structures.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the written test, the student must demonstrate his/her ability to solve problems concerning the statics and kinematics of elastic beam structures. During the oral test, the student must be able to demonstrate his/her understanding and knowledge of the topics of the course.

  • Final written exam

Further information:
The final exam is divided into two parts: a written test and an oral test. The written test lasts up to three hours. The test requires the student to solve one or more problems concerning the statics and kinematics of elastic beam structures. The overcoming of the written test is a prerequisite for the admission to the oral test.

Syllabus
Statics and kinematics of rigid beam structures: definitions, restraints and constraints, loads, internal forces, equilibrium equations, particular cases (reticulated structures, arches etc.). Statics and kinematics of elastic beam structures: fundamentals of mechanics of materials, constitutive laws for linearly elastic beams, differential equations according to Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories, principle of virtual work, force and displacement methods for the solution of statically indeterminate structures.
