Learning outcomes
Knowledge
Students who complete the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main processes and events in British and Irish history in the 19th and 20th century. They will be able to read critically some historical documents and will have demonstrated the ability to define some (circumscribed) historiographical problems, approach them and present the results in a structured way.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results. - The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Syllabus
The course covers the 19th and 20th century political history of Britain and Ireland. Particular attention will be paid to topics such as the Irish national movement, the debate in Britain on the Home Rule for Ireland, the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, Britain between the two World Wars, the relations between Britain and Ireland between the two World Wars and after the Second World War.
