L'educazione letteraria e intellettuale nella cultura e nella civiltà romana dall'età repubblicana e imperiale. Forme dell'istruzione, istituzioni, figure educative, testi di scuola e pratiche didattiche.
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main authors and texts of ancient Latin literature. He or she will be able to value the literary texts inserting them inside their historical context and their literary genre, to look critically at their literary, stylistic and ideological features and will have demonstrated the ability to approach a specific Latin literary text, define a (circumscribed) problem and present the results in a structured way.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

A queste letture è da aggiungere la conoscenza della storia della letteratura latina dalle origini alla tarda antichità, da preparare su un manuale in uso nei licei (per es. G.B. Conte, Letteratura latina, Firenze, Le Monnier, più volte ristampato).
Syllabus
The course covers the general chronological framework of ancient Latin literature from the beginnings (III c. B.C) until the V c. C.E.. Particular attention will be paid to themes such as literary genres and their evolution, the relationships between, on one side, literary activity and, on the other side, his historical context (with special regard to the social position of the author, to the possibile literary patronage and to the ideological aspects of the works). A part of the course will be dedicated to the analysis of Vergil's Aeneid and its relations with the Augustan ideology.
