Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to analyse philologically and linguistically the South Arabian epigraphic documentation in its cultural context. He/she will be able to read, transcribe and translate a South Arabian inscription, discussing its linguistic features, and to describe the artistic characteristics of its support. Moreover, he will have the ability to catalogue the epigraph in the online archive “DASI-Digital Archive for the study of pre-Islamic Arabian Inscriptions” of the University of Pisa.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

- During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material. His/her ability to read and analyse the linguistic features of some of the South Arabian texts studied during the course will be assessed. - The student must demonstrate the ability to individually work on the DASI data entry tool, inserting the data of a number of South Arabian epigraphs, as illustrated and practices during the course.

Studio della traslitterazione dal sudarabico.

Studio della grammatica sabea ed elementi delle altre lingue sudarabiche.

Studio della digitalizzazione di epigrafi nel Data entry DASI

Syllabus

The first part of the course covers the script and the grammar of the South Arabian languages, with transliteration and translation execises. Particular attention is paid to the Sabaic language. The second part of the course provides the skills to digitally catalogue the South Arabian epigraphic documentation in the DASI archive, analysing and recording the linguistic, onomastic and philological features of the text, the artistic features of the support, the bibliographical references etc.
