The course will examine the relationship between the representative institutions and democracy in the history of western political thought. In this context the focus will be on the main principles of "representative government" and the different forms assumed by these principles from the time of their invention to the present day (i.e. parliamentarism, party democracy, audience democracy). Particular attention will be devoted to the new forms of political representation and democratic practices that have emerged outside the channels of national parliamentary democracy.
