The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a general understanding of the fundamentals of solid mechanics. In particular, the student will have a good knowledge of linear elasticity theory, the most common failure criteria, and the solution to Saint Venant's problem. Furthermore, the student will have a basic knowledge of the problem of equilibrium stability of beams. The student will be able to formulate and solve analytically simple problems concerning the subject of the course.
In the written test, the student must demonstrate his/her ability to solve problems concerning solid mechanics and equilibrium stability of beams. During the oral test, the student must be able to demonstrate his/her understanding and knowledge of the topics of the course.
Methods:
- Final oral exam
- Final written exam
Further information:
The final exam is divided into two parts: a written test and an oral test. The written test lasts up to three hours. The test requires the student to solve one or more problems concerning solid mechanics and equilibrium stability of beams. The overcoming of the written test is a prerequisite for the admission to the oral test.
Delivery: face to face
Learning activities:
- attending lectures
- individual study
Attendance: Advised
Teaching methods:
- Lectures
Fundamentals of solid mechanics: statics and kinematics of continuous bodies, principle of virtual work, basic concepts of mechanics of materials, elastic equilibrium problem, energy theorems, failure criteria. Saint Venant's problem: formulation, exact solutions for the cases of extension and bending, approximate solutions for the cases of shear and torsion. Equilibrium stability of beams: definitions, non-linear equilibrium equations for structures made of rigid and/or flexible beams, determination of the critical load.
