Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfuly completes the course will have a basic knowlwdge about hardware and most relevant software, included operating systems; he will have also a basic knowlwdge about the concept of digitalization of informtion and about the meaning and use of logic operators; he will have finally a basic knowlwdge about network communication protocols and use of internet; such a basic knowlwdge is expected to enable the student to optimally handle the applicative software which he will have to use during the time he will accomplish his Long Degree Program and later on in his future job.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The written exam consists of a number of question to which the student must answer in a relatively synthetic but complete manner. The evaluation takes into account how much the above requirement is satistied by the student; in case the student needs an oral description of his written answers he can have a supplemental oral exam.

Further information:
In order to pass the exam the student must correctly answwer to 60% of the questions and the grade will be fully based on the exam.

Definition of hardware, software and algorithm Mention of the theoretical and computational model of Turing and von Neumann. Logical structure of a computer Elementary notions of logic (logic operators or connectors:Negation, Conjunction, Exclusive Disjunction, Inclusive disjunction, Material implication, Tautology, Contradiction Definition of the ways by which information can be encoded (digital or analog) Introduction of binary, decimal and hexadecimal numbering ; comparison between them Definition of the basic unit for information Definition of the meaning of “instruction”; Different nstruction types Definition of programming languages with details about the different hierarchical levels Operating Systems; translation of an algorithm into a computer program; Machine language; High-level languages Source Code Compiler Object Code Linker Loader the use of logical operators for the web search in PubMed ECDL : presentation of each one of the 7 modules with related examples

Recommended reading includes notes written by the teacher and specific scientific articles suggested during the course.
