L’obiettivo principale del corso consiste nel fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per interpretare e comprendere i cambiamenti storici, politici, religiosi, sociali ed economici avvenuti nel Vicino Oriente dalla crisi dell’Impero Ottomano sino agli anni ’80 del XX secolo.
Students who complete this course successfully will develop a solid knowledge of the main political processes and events in the modern Middle East history (1918-1991) and will be aware of the historical background that is necessary to understand present developments in the Middle East. More specifically, they will be able to understand the origins and the development of the modern Middle East and will be aware of the political, social, economic, and cultural elements that still characterize the region nowadays. Finally, they will be able to engage and look critically at the main historiography dealing with the Middle East history of the 20th century.
Le conoscenze maturate dagli studenti durante il corso verranno verificate ogni lezione, in occasione della discussione sulle letture assegnate.
Students who attend course's classes and write the final paper must demonstrate the ability to thoroughly deal with a specific topic and to critically address the identified research question. Review of literature, and personal interpretation are among the main criteria for the teacher’s judgement. During the oral exam, students must be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the book/books and be able to discuss their/its contents thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Further information:
Students who attend course's classes are required to: - actively participate in the class discussions concerning the assigned readings. 20% of the final grade is based on that. - write a final paper (5,000 word long) that deals with a specific topic chosen by each student among those covered in the course. The final paper has to be submitted before the oral exam. The paper corresponds to 50% of the final grade. - take an oral exam. 30% of the final grade is based on the oral exam. Students who do not attend course's classes will take an oral exam. The final grade is based only on the oral exam.
Alla fine del corso, gli studenti avranno maturato la capacità di analizzare criticamente le principali tendenze politiche, sociali, culturali ed economiche accadute nel Vicino Oriente nel corso del XX secolo.
Le capacità maturate dagli studenti durante il corso verranno verificate ogni lezione, in occasione della discussione sulle letture assegnate.

Per seguire il corso in maniera più proficua, gli studenti dovrebbero avere conoscenze relative alla storia internazionale del XX secolo.
Il corso, di 36 ore divise in 18 lezioni, dura nove settimane. Le lezioni sono frontali, ma è richiesta agli studenti una partecipazione attiva alla discussione che verterà su una serie di letture. Tali letture - caricate sulla piattaforma moodle (http://elearning.humnet.unipi.it/course/view.php?id=1793) e già distribuite tra le varie lezioni - fanno parte integrante del programma d’esame.
Il corso inizierà giovedì 21 settembre e terminerà venerdì 24 novembre.

This course provides students with a historical, political, economic, social overview of the modern Middle East. After a brief introduction on the beginning of Islam, the history of the Caliphates and the history of the Ottoman Empire, this course covers the chronological framework of the 20th century, focusing in particular on two main periods: the European presence in the region, starting with the British arrival in Egypt until the Suez War (1882-1956), and the Cold War, starting with the Eisenhower doctrine (1957) up to the first Gulf War (1991). Classes focus on the main "actors" of region, such as States (Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Israel/Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the Gulf monarchies), regional organisations (The Arab League, the GCC), trans-national movements and groups, and resources (water and oil).

Students who attend course's classes will have to:
- Study one book on the history of the modern Middle East. They can choose either an Italian text (M. Emiliani, Medio Oriente. Una storia dal 1918 al 1991, Bari-Roma, Laterza, 2017) or an English text (W. Cleveland, A History of the Modern Middle East, Westview Press, 2012)
- Read the readings that are included in the syllabus uploaded online (http://elearning.humnet.unipi.it/course/view.php?id=1793) at the beginning of the course.
Students who do not attend course's classes will have to study the following books:
1) M. Emiliani, Medio Oriente. Una storia dal 1918 al 1991, Bari-Roma, Laterza, 2012
2) W. Montgomery Watt, Breve Storia dell'Islam, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2001
3) One among the following books:
a) R. Di Peri, Il Libano contemporaneo, Roma Carocci, 2009 (or 2017)
b) L. Nocera, La Turchia contemporanea, Roma Carocci, 2011
c) R. Redaelli, A. Plebani, L’Iraq contemporaneo, Roma Carocci, 2013

Per i non frequentanti, l'esame consisterà in una prova orale sugli argomenti trattati dai seguenti tre volumi:
1) W. Montgomery Watt, Breve Storia dell'Islam, Il Mulino, 2001
2) M. Emiliani, Medio Oriente. Una storia dal 1918 al 1991, Laterza, 2017.
3) Un testo a scelta tra questi:
- R. Di Peri, Il Libano contemporaneo. Storia, politica, civiltà, Carocci, 2009 (o la nuova edizione
del 2017)
- R. Redaelli, L'Iran contemporaneo, Carocci, 2011
- L. Nocera, La Turchia contemporanea. Dalla Repubblica Kemalista al governo AKP, Carocci,
2011
- R. Redaelli, A. Plebani, L'Iraq contemporaneo, Carocci, 2013
Per gli studenti frequentanti, il voto finale sarà determinato sulla base di:
1) la frequenza attiva alle lezioni, che conterà per il 20% del voto.
2) un paper di una lunghezza compresa tra le 4,000 e le 5,000 parole (note incluse, bibliografia esclusa), su un argomento da concordare preventivamente con il docente. Tale paper dovrà essere mandato via e-mail all’indirizzo mail arturo.marzano@unipi.it improrogabilmente entro due settimane esatte dalla data in cui lo studente sosterrà la prova orale, e conterà per il 40% del voto. Tale elaborato verrà discusso nel corso della prova orale, che lo studente sarà libero di sostenere in uno qualsiasi degli appelli di esame fissati dal docente.
