Conoscenze

Al termine del corso, lo studente:

- avrà acquisito le conoscenze necessarie per comprendere le implicazioni ambientali delle colture orticole e ornamentali in campo, serra o vivaio;

- saprà stimare i fabbisogni di energia, acqua e fertilizzanti delle colture orticole e ornamentali;

Knowledge

At the end of the course, the student will know:

- how to understand and assess the environmental implications of vegetable and ornamental crops in open field, greenhouse and nursery;
- how to estimate the requirements of energy, water and fertilizers of vegetable and ornamental crops;
- the agronomic measures to reduce the environmental impact of vegetable and ornamental crops.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Knowledge assessment will be carried out through in itinere tests (written tests), on-the-spot questions addressed by the teacher to students during lessons and practical classes, and meetings between the teacher and the students (upon request of the latter).

A classroom exercise is planned for the final exam preparation.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The lectures are performed with the use of slides and videos, while practical classes are performed in a teaching laboratory on in a greenhouse.

The teaching material is provided as pdf file to the students through the E-learning site.
The interaction between the teacher and the students takes place through interviews at the end of classes or by appointment, and by email.

During the course the teacher gives the students advice and suggestion to guide them in the individual study and in the preparation of the exam.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The course illustrates the environmental implications of vegetable and ornamental crops through the analysis of case studies relating mainly to greenhouse and nursery crops.
Methods are presented to estimate the energy, water and fertilizer requirements of vegetable and ornamental crops and the agronomic measures that can be taken, on a commercial scale, to reduce their environmental impact.
Some lessons are devoted to environmental certification and the economic evaluation of technological innovations that a company could be implement for sustainable production of vegetables, cut flowers and ornamental plants.
The program also includes lectures (by the teacher or invited speakers) on particular topics (e.g. peat substrates) and a series of exercises on the determination of water and mineral requirements of vegetable and ornamental crops.
There are also laboratory exercises on the rapid chemical analysis of soils and plant tissues and a guided tour to greenhouses and nurseries in Tuscany or in other regions.
The content of the course changes slightly from year to year and therefore the detailed program is distributed by the teacher at the beginning of the semester.

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

The slides related to a particular topic are generally uploaded online a few days before the lesson/s devoted to that topic. Each chapter of the course book is uploaded online right after the end of the lessons related to the topics in the chapter.

The full course book is loaded online as a single file at the end of the semester and left available to students who did not attend the course for the whole academic year.

Assessment methods

The exam for attending students includes two written tests, in itinere and at the end of the semester

For students who have not attended the course, the exam consists of one written test.

Written tests include open and/or closed answer questions, and computational exercises related to the topics taught by the teacher. The result of on-going test is valid for the entire academic year.

The written test is passed if the score is 18/30 or higher.
