Conoscenze

'interested' + 'in' + ...).

Knowledge

The English language component of the undergraduate degree course L-36 is made up of two different courses: one (termed the 'lettorato') is a general English language course; the other (the 'corso del docente') focuses on specific aspects of the language.

Corso Docente: After successfully completing the course, students will have a much better knowledge of English 'phraseology', including the ways in which it coincides with, and differs from, Italian phraseology. Phraseology is concerned with the way in which words typically combine in a language to form (a) longer units of meaning (e.g. red tape), (b) typical combinations of words (e.g. 'heavy traffic'), and (3) connections between one element and others (e.g. 'interested' + 'in' + ...).

Lettorato: At the end of the course students should have sufficient knowledge of English to be judged of a B1+ level in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. For further details, contact the course teachers (see Note 3) or consult the Language Centre's elearning website: https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.

How the European Union Works.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Corso docente: knowledge is assessed through a written exam in which students will have to analyze, with respect to phraseology, a text extract from How the European Union Works

Lettorato: knowledge is assessed through written and spoken tests after the end of the course. Students who regularly attend a course which brings them up to a B1+ level will be able to do parts of the test at the end of the course (rather than afterwards).

Skills

Corso docente: After successful completion of the course, students will have improved their language skills generally, since they will have a greater awareness of the importance of the phraseological component of English. Connected to this, they will also be more aware of the fact that often English and Italian do not coincide from the point of view of the lexis and phraseology which make up the respective languages.

Lettorato: After completing the course, students should have reached a B1+ level in the four basic language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing (in relation to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

How the European Union Works.

Assessment criteria of skills

Corso docente: skills are assessed through a written exam in which students will have to analyze, with respect to phraseology, a text extract from How the European Union Works.

Lettorato: skills are assessed through written and spoken tests after the end of the course. Students who regularly attend a course which brings them up to a B1+ level will be able to do parts of the test at the end of the course (rather than afterwards).

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Students will be drawn closer to the English language since they will have a developed a better understanding of some of the reasons why English often expresses a concept in a certain way (while in Italian different wording is used). The foreign language will therefore become a little 'less foreign'.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

There will not be any specific ways of assessing to what extent the student's perception of English as a 'foreign' language has altered.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the academic year, students are expected to have at least a B1 level of English (with respect to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

In the corso Docente, lessons will take the form of informative, teacher-centred lectures, interspersed with individual student work followed by discussion and feedback. Lessons will be predominantly in English, with Italian being used where it is believed that explanations would be too demanding if English was used. PowerPoint will be used in lessons, both as a supplement to the oral presentation of notions and as a way of highlighting the presence of phraseological units in texts (through the use of colour and other typographical means).

Students should bring to lessons both study texts; in the case of How the European Union Works, it would be useful for students to have both a paper and a digital copy, though the paper version will be the more useful in class.

Details of the course teacher's office hours ('ricevimento') may be found on the following website: https://unimap.unipi.it.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Corso docente: The main focus of the course is the importance in English of phraseological units of meaning. The course is partly text-based, in that one specific work (How the European Union Works) will be analyzed from the point of view of its phraseological content. Analysis is carried out with reference to the phrasal typology presented in Special Word Combinations in English; an outline of the typology can be seen in the Index of this text (pp. 115-116).

Non-attending students info

The syllabus is the same for all students, whether attending lessons or not.

Assessment methods

The overall mark for the exam will take into consideration both the 'lettore' exam (or approved certificate) and the mark for the exam relating to the 'corso docente'.

Corso docente:

The exam at the end of the 'corso docente' is a written exam in which students must (1) read an extract from How the European Union Works, and (2) answer questions relating to the phraseology of English, part or all of which relate to the extract.

In order to sit the exam, students must have already passed the written part of the 'lettorato' exam.

Lettorato:

Lettorato: the test components

The lettorato exam consists of the following three components: 1) listening exercises; 2) a written test (reading comprehension, grammar, written production); 3) speaking.

Lettorato: partial pass marks and access to the speaking test

1) In order to sit the speaking test, students must have already passed the other two parts of the lettorato exam, and no more than 12 months should elapse between passing these two parts and doing the speaking test.

2) The listening part and the written part of the test are considered separately from the point of pass-fail distinction. If only one of the two parts is passed, the relative mark remains valid for 12 months, after which both parts will have to be done again.

Lettorato: Enrolment for exams

Enrolment for the lettorato exam is via the elearning website of the Centro Linguistico (https://elearning.cli.unipi.it).

Lettorato: Number of tests during the year

There will be four opportunities during the year to do the lettorato exams. Details will be made available on the website https://elearning.cli.unipi.it

Lettorato: marking system

Marks for this exam are out of 100, and are divided up as follows: 25 for listening, 25 for reading and grammar, 25 for writing, and 25 for speaking.

Lettorato: Certificates

Students who have an internationally recognized certificate which attests an overall level of at least B1+, and which covers all four language skills, may be exempted from the requirement to take the lettorato exam, depending on the level of the certificate and the date on which the exam was taken.

With reference to the series of Cambridge exams which includes the KET, PET, FCE, CAE and Proficiency, the minimum overall mark accepted is 153, and the time periods for which certificates are valid (i.e. within which students must have sat the 'Docente' exam) are as follows: overall mark 153-172, 2 years; 173-192, 3 years; 193 and above, 4 years.

With regard to the IELTS exam, the following overall marks will be valid for the following periods of time: 5-6, 2 years; 6.5-7.5, 3 years; 8-9, 4 years.

With regard to other certificates, and remembering that all 4 skills must have been tested, students should send a copy of the certificate to the 'Presidente della Commissione d'esame'. Note that certificates must be issued by internationally recognized exam authorities.

Note

Notes

1) The English language component of the undergraduate degree course L-36 is made up of two different courses: one (termed the lettorato) is a general English language course; the other (the corso del docente) focuses on specific aspects of the language.

2) The lettorato courses. As well as the course which aims to take students to the exam's B1+ level, there may also be an additional course, aiming to bring students to a B1 level and allowing them to follow a B1+ course the following year.

3) The teachers currently working in the lettorato courses are Dott.ssa Fowler and Dott.ssa Perpetuini.

4) Students are strongly advised to attend the English lettorato courses, especially if their level is not yet that required for the exam. It is also advisable not to leave preparation for the English exam till the last year of the degree course - it takes time to learn a foreign language well.

5) With regard to the exam on the corso del docente, this will take the form of a written test as of the first exam session after the end of the course (i.e. the 1st exam in the summer session). Before that, exams will be the same as in recent years, that is they will be oral exams.
